Q1
Read the passage given below and choose the most appropriate to each question out of the options that follow: [1x5=5]
In ancient times, the Olympics were associated with Greek religious festivals. Life in ancient Greece revolved around their gods. The Greeks believed that their gods were immortal, and more powerful than human beings. They honoured their gods with festivals devoted to sports.
The most important of these festivals were the four national festivals. They were open to sportsmen from all Greek regions and colonies. Each of the festivals was held at a different place and was celebrated in honour of a particular god. The Olympic Games were held in Olympia which was an important religious centre in ancient Greece. A magnificent temple was built there in honour of the god, Zeus. He was regarded as the ruler of both gods and men. People tried to please Zeus by excelling in sports, and many contests of skill and strength were held.
It was believed that the Olympic Games were founded by the Greek hero, Hercules who was known as the son of the god, Zeus. He performed twelve seemingly impossible tasks to become the greatest of all Greek heroes. He cleaned in a single day King Augeas' stables which was an impossible task. The king was fabulously rich and had thousands and thousands of animals. So his stables were extremely dirty and full of stink. Hercules redirected the course of the river, Alpheus through the stables of the king. All the muck and dirt were washed out in a single day. To celebrate this achievement he started the Olympic Games in honour of his father, Zeus.

Oh, books, what books they used to know,
Those children living long ago!
So please, oh please, we beg, we pray,
Go throw your TV set away,
And in its place you can install
A lovely bookshelf on the wall.
Then fill the shelves with lots of books,
Ignoring all the dirty looks, ...
Fear not, because we promise you
That, in about a week or two
Of having nothing else to do,
They'll now begin to feel the need
Of having something to read.
And once they start --- oh boy, oh boy!
You watch the slowly growing joy
That fills their hearts. They’ll grow so keen
They’ll wonder what they’d ever seen
In that ridiculous machine ...

At the end of the first day, the carpenter prepared fifteen doors. His boss was happy with his performance and congratulated him. The carpenter tried harder the next day but he was able to prepare only 10 doors. The third day he tried even harder, but he could prepare only seven. Day after day he was preparing less and less doors.
"I must be losing my strength," the carpenter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on. Dear Hiten
How are you? I hope this letter finds you in the best of health and spirits. I just finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. It is an extraordinarily beautiful book. The author has interwoven the story of two Afghan women beautifully. I cannot tell you how thoroughly I enjoyed the book. I strongly recommend the book to you. After reading the book, I have developed a soft corner for the Afghan people. I can see how humans across the world are only divided by boundaries. Our sensibilities and our sentiments unite us in a very strong manner. Please do not miss out on this book. Looking forward to seeing you this weekend.
Yours affectionately

Sir,
Subject: Accidents caused by High Tension electric wires
Through the columns of your esteemed national daily, I wish to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards their own negligence in the upkeep of electric wires.
I am a resident of Khajoori Khas, Delhi, and in my locality there are many high tension electric wires hanging loose. Children can easily reach for them and those people travelling on two wheelers late in the night can easily get entangled in them. Recently a young man lost his life as he got electrocuted while returning home from work. It was dark and he couldn’t see the wires and ran into them.
I urge the authorities to tackle this problem at the earliest.
Thanking you,
Yours sincerely,
Akriti

Dear Sir,
Subject: skyrocketing prices of food articles
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the steep surge in the prices of food items.
I don’t understand how the people of this country are supposed to survive these trying times. Especially since 40% of the population is below poverty lines. It has become extremely difficult to make both ends meet. There is clearly a lack of balance when it comes to income and expenditure.
The gap between the wholesale prices and retail prices are shocking. We the common people are paying exorbitant prices for daily needs out of meagre salaries.
I think the government should either pave way for a mandatory wage hike, or it should formulate plans to bring the wholesale and retail prices at par. I request the authorities to alleviate the distress of the common man.
Thanking you
Yours sincerely

A very good morning to everyone. Today, I, Prerna Grewal, stand before you to talk aboutthe latest mosquito menace. Many diseases caused by mosquito bites are becoming increasingly common in today's time.
One look at the newspapers every morning and all you get to see is the rise in death toll or number of people hospitalised due to dengue fever or malaria. Friends, it has become the need of the hour to be informed and aware. Dengue mosquitoes breed in clean water so ensure that there is not stagnant water near your house. They bite during the daytime, so it is ideal to wear full sleeved clothes and full trousers or pants which will keep you safe. dont let water accumulate in coolers or plants.
Always carry mosquito repellent creams with you and use mosquito coils or liquid vapourisers. As has always been rightly said, prevention is better than cure. I hope everyone here will spread this knowledge to more and more people and make this fight against dengue and malaria stronger. Thank You!

Anjali: Hello, Tarun. I am good. I called you to talk about Grandmother's 60th birthday next week. Do you have any plans?
Tarun: Yes. I wanted to talk to you about the same. Sara and I were thinking we should make a short video for Dadi.
Anjali: Oh, that is a brilliant idea. Each of us can record a small message and then Amit can compile it and edit it.
Tarun: Sara was suggesting that we should all buy her a gift, collectively. She wanted to read Shantaram since a long time. I say we should gift her that book.
Anjali: A book alone would be too less. I suggest we should gift her a saree and a book.
Tarun: That sounds like a good idea. I will take care of the book and Sara and I will send in our videos by tomorrow.
Anjali: Great. Mom and I will get the saree and I will talk to Amit about the videos.
