Q1
Read the passage given below and complete the sentences that follow by choosing the most appropriate options: 1x5=5
My peers always thought of me as a dull boy when I was in School and my teachers never thought differently. That was because I was Indeed a dull boy. I was a backbencher, after all.
I could never have been a frontbencher for obvious reasons. I had a persistent paranoia of being under the watchful eye of the teacher. It used to make me self-conscious and I hated being under supervision right from childhood. I wanted to be my own boss.
I have no regrets about having been a backbencher. It is true that I used to occupy one of the seats in the last row of the class but that does not mean that I did not listen to the teacher or that I cheated on homework.
In England, there used to be a dunce's corner for students who were slow learners. A student in the dunce's corner was supposed to be the rough equivalent of a backbencher in our country.
Some eminent personalities from whom teachers didn't have very high expectations early on in life included the inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, as well as entrepreneurs, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. I feel honored to be in their company!
There are others, of course, who prefer to make funny sounds, complete pending homework and throw chalks at other students - all sitting on those 'privileged seats'.
Believe me, it feels great! Because you not only learn whatever is taught but also get a back-eye-view of everything that happens in the class.

Dear Isha
How are you? I hope you are doing well. I have been good as well. I missed you at Nayan’s sister’s wedding reception. It was such great fun! You know, they were unorthodox with the settings. They created an altar for the bride and groom and they were welcomed with great cheer. There were dance performances from the bride and groom’s sides respectively. Shama aunty is a really good dancer. You missed it!
The wedding cake was the best part. I couldn’t resist taking two helpings. Let’s meet sometime soon. I will give you more details.

Rural exodus: The urban problem
By Shreyas Mukherjee
These days, the growing number of slums in the cities has become a problem. More and more anti-social elements have taken refuge in the slums and made it impossible for the city dwellers to live in peace.
The problem is the mass exodus of people from villages to cities. They come in search of better job opportunities as agriculture and other small time opportunities in the rural areas are not as promising. Moreover, the government’s focus has remained on urbanization and industrialization since a long time. Better planning or urban areas to accommodate more people should be a priority.
The only solution to this problem is to create more job opportunities in the rural areas so that the development of rural areas can be bolstered. Only a balanced approach towards development can solve this problem.

Books Are Our Best Friends
Respected principal, teachers and my dear friends, today I stand infront of you to talk about our actual best friends- books.
Books are indeed lifelong friends, for no human being can help us as much as book can. It is a known fact that command over a language can only develop with reading and speaking. In fact, reading has such a tremendous influence over our thoughts and linguistic skills. Friends, we are aware of the fact that employability in today’s time depends immensely on our personality, education and linguistic skills.
Reading is a leisure activity, thus it has a significant relaxing impact on us. It rejuvenates our mind and also imparts knowledge while it does that. Therefore, it is certain that none can be so useful as books can. Books are indeed our truest friends. Thank you!
