Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow : 1×8=8

If you are addicted to coffee, and doctors warn you to quit the habit, don’t worry and just keep relishing the beverage, because it’s not that bad after all! In fact, according to a new study, the steaming cup of Java can beat fruits and vegetables as the primary source of antioxidants. Some studies state that coffee is the number one source of antioxidants in American diet, and both caffeinated and decaf versions appear to provide similar antioxidant levels.

Antioxidants in general have been linked to a number of potential health benefits, including protection against heart diseases and cancer, but Vinson, a dietitian said that their benefits ultimately depend on how they are absorbed and utilized in the body. The research says that coffee outranks popular antioxidant sources like tea, milk, chocolate and cranberries. Of all the foods and beverages studied, dates actually have the most antioxidants based solely on serving size, but since dates are not consumed anywhere near the level of coffee, the drink comes as the top source of antioxidants, Vinson said.

Besides keeping you alert and awake, coffee has been linked to an increasing number of potential health benefits, including protection against liver and colon cancer, type 2 diabetes, and Parkinson’s disease, according to some recently published studies.

The researchers, however, advise that one should consume coffee in moderation, because it can make you jittery and cause stomach pains.
    a. What do doctors advise us about the habit of drinking coffee?

    b. What are the two versions of coffee that are drunk in America?

    c. State any two benefits of antioxidants.

    d. What does Vinson say about the consumption of antioxidants

    e. Name any two popular sources of antioxidants.

    (e) Tea and milk are two popular sources of antioxidants.

    (f) Though dates are the richest in antioxidants, they are not consumed as much as coffee is; thus, coffee becomes the top source of antioxidants.

    (h) Researchers warn us that excessive consumption of coffee can make us jittery and also cause stomach pains.

    Gandhiji As a Fund Raiser

Gandhiji was an incurable and irresistible fund raiser. He found special relish in getting jewellery from women. Ranibala of Burdwan was ten years old. One day she was playing with Gandhiji. He explained to her that her bangles were too heavy for her delicate little wrists. She removed the bangles and gave them away to Gandhiji.

He used to talk jokingly to small girls and created distaste for    ornaments and created a desire in them to part with the jewellery for the sake of the poor. He motivated them to donate their jewellery for social usage.

Kasturbai didn’t appreciate this habit of Gandhiji. Once she stated calmly, ‘You don’t wear jewels, it is easy for you to get around the boys. But what about our daughters-in-law? They would surely want them.’

“Well!” Gandhiji put in mildly, “our children are young and when they grow up they will not surely choose wives who are fond of wearing jewellery.” Kasturbai was very upset with the answer.

    Dear Sir,

Subject: skyrocketing prices of food articles

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to draw the attention of the concerned authorities towards the steep surge in the prices of food items.
I don’t understand how the middle class family is supposed to survive these trying times. Especially since salaries are not going up, but prices of commodities are. There is clearly a lack of balance when it comes to income and expenditure. I request the authorities to consider the plight of the middle class more seriously and act swiftly to alleviate this distress.

    Thanking you
    Yours sincerely

                                                       Good Manners
                                                  By Pranjal Batra, X-B

It is rightly said that “a man’s manners are a mirror in which he shows his portrait”.

In this world, only kindness begets kindness and thereby, manners become important assets of personality. Good manners are extremely crucial as they form the first step to success. Manners make life easy as politeness creates goodwill.

Words like thank you, sorry, please, etc. are known as magic words. That is because people highly appreciate all these words worldwide. Moreover, these words create a good lasting impression about the behaviour of a person.

Therefore, good manners are indispensable and should undoubtedly be taught right from childhood. Manners can  make a man and also shape his future. That is the primary reason why so much of importance is given to moral education these days.
We must always remember that no matter how drastically times change, good manners will never lose their importance.

The hints of the story are given above. You can start the story by using hints with your own ideas but you cannot change the end. Write the story in 150-200 words.

    Marks:10
    Answer:

It was a cold winter’s night and it was calm all around. I had stayed up past midnight as I was engrossed in the book that I was reading. Everybody was sound asleep. The house, the streets, everything was quiet. Around 1 A.M, I started feeling drowsy. Even my quilt had gotten really warm and cozy. I decided not to resist the temptation to curl up and sleep anymore and switched off the lights and went to bed. Fifteen minutes had elapsed and I had only begun to slip into a deeper, more peaceful slumber when I heard an unsettling thud. The second time I heard that sound, I opened my eyes and woke up with a start. All was quiet and after a few minutes, I shrugged and went back inside my quilt. After an hour, I hear a loud thud. I woke up with a jolt and picked up a baseball bat and a flashlight.

The corridor between my room and my parents’ room was dark and the staircase was just next to their room. I went near the foot of the staircase and saw a light in the attic. I climbed up with trembling feet and pushed the door open. I was shocked and my mother and my brother nearly screamed. They were only putting together a surprise gift for my father!

    OR

It was my final year of college and my sister’s wedding was four months after. Everybody was busy in the preparations. I, being the only sister was the most happily busy person. At that time, my semester exams had been delayed. Since there was no news regarding the date of the exams I was devoting more time to the wedding preparations, but I made it a point to study for an hour every night before going to bed.

With only six weeks to go for the wedding, our university brought out the datesheet. My exams were to commence five days after. I was horrified as I had only five days left to prepare for four subjects and our relatives had begun to arrive for the wedding. I didn’t know what to do and was on the verge of a breakdown when my parents sat me down and had a long talk with me. I was immediately relieved of all my “wedding duties” and my task was to only study. My cousin took over all of my duties for two weeks and my parents made it a point to check on me every few hours. It was their support that pulled me through. Finally, the D-day arrived and I reached the exam hall. I was a bundle of nerves but as soon as the exam commenced, I was focused. A few days after the wedding, the results were announced and I took a sigh of relief when I found out that I had not only done well, but I stood first in the class!

                                                       Or

“Don’t you worry, Pitaji! In your old age I will serve you and mother”. Through this statement the narrator wants to highlight the moral values Bholi was imbued with. Based on the reading of the lesson, what made Bholi aware of her rights and how did she use them?

    Marks:4
    Answer:

Kisa Gotami was grief stricken as she had lost her child. When she went to the Buddha and begged him to revive her child, he told her to get a few mustard seeds from the house where no one has died. When Kisa Gotami realised that there was not even a single house where someone had not died, she understood what the Buddha was trying to teach her. Death is inevitable and present all around us. Kisa Gotami was so absorbed in her own loss that she didn’t realise that she was not the only person who had lost a loved one. She realised that one has to accept the truth and grieving and crying cannot bring anyone peace. She learned that he who overcomes grief will be blessed.

    OR

On seeing Bholi’s pockmarked face, Bhishamber refused to marry her until the promise of an additional five thousand rupees to be paid as dowry was made. Bholi was now educated and her education instilled in her self confidence. She took charge of the situation and refused to marry such a greedy man. She preferred to maintain her dignity and serve her parents instead of marrying a greedy old man. Her education made her aware of her rights and her love and respect for her parents made her vow never to marry and be there for her parents till the very end.
