Read the passage given below and complete the sentences that follow by choosing the most appropriate options:      5

The tree is worshipped as the earth mother in tribal India. It provides food, air, occupation, materials for housing, fodder for animals and fuel. Without the trees there is neither soil nor water. There is nothing to prevent the soil from being washed away; there is nothing to prevent the water from evaporating. In the great tribal Tegions of India which are home  to the Bhils, the Santhals, the Nagas, the Bishnois, whenever a child is born a tree is planted tn the child’s name. It forges a relationship between  child and tree closer than the one between child and family. Naturally so because that tree is specially the child’s own. The trees are all slow growing. By the time the child reaches adolescence, his tree has just come into fruit. It starts its life as provider to the tribal and the tribal’s life as guardian of the tree.

Nearly three hundred years ago, men and women of the Bishnoi tribe died in an attempt to stop the felling of trees. The Bishnoi  faith  prohibits  the cutting of green trees. It demands absolute protection  of  the  ‘Khejri,’ the shade and fodder tree of the area. As a result, their lands are still fertile, while all around them fields have been reclaimed by the Thar Desert of Rajasthan.

Each day is a gift, and as long as Ian alive I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life.” The attendant was greatly touched by the elderly

Through the columns of your esteemed national daily, I would like to discuss the historic beauty and cultural significance of India’s heartland- Delhi.

Delhi is not only a capital, but a mini-India in all fairness. It is a melting pot of cultures where everybody is welcome to carve their own niche. It houses many medieval and modern architectural marvels such as the Rashtrapati Bhavan, Qutub Minar, The Delhi Metro, etc. It has many sprawling shopping malls and neatly manicured and maintained gardens such as the Lodi Gardens, The Garden of Five Senses, etc. Delhi is a one stop destination for all your needs.

Such is the beauty of our national capital. It provides not only the best educational and employment opportunities, but also has much to offer in terms of art and culture. It is indeed the city of my dreams.

    By Abha Thapalyal

A teacher is an essential companion every person has to have. She shapes your intellect in the formative years of your life and no matter what; one can never forget certain teachers in their lives.

Our teachers are perhaps just as responsible as our parents in the formation of the person we become in our adult years, if not more. An ideal teacher is not only hard working but inculcates the habit of doing hard work within her students. She sets examples by her honesty, punctuality and integrity. She leads by example and instills civic and democratic values among her students.

The youth of today can be seen talking on cellphones for hours together in buses, on roads, in schools and colleges, thus wasting their precious time, neglecting studies and sometimes even risking their lives due to accidents. Write a debate in 120-150 words either for or against the topic, ‘The use of mobile phone is more a disadvantage than an advantage.’ (5)

    Marks:5
    Answer:

The use of mobile phones is more a disadvantage than an advantage

    For

Respected Chairman, members of the Jury and my worthy fellow debaters, a hearty good morning to you all. I stand here today to express my views in favour of today’s debate. I strongly believe that the use of mobile phones is more a disadvantage than a n advantage. Most of us cannot imagine a moment without them. They definitely have bridged the gap between people and facilitated communication between people dwelling in distant cities, but spending too much time on them is indeed nothing short of an addiction.

Our generation spends hours on mobiles and most of us don’t exercise caution while using phones while walking on roads, travelling in buses. In fact many cases of phone confiscations have started happening in schools and colleges. Mobile phones have practically invaded each and every space. Some of us have begun to even neglect our studies and waste our time playing games or chit chatting with friends. Usage of mobile phones while driving is another menace. So many lives are lost due to sheer negligence.

Friends, in the end, I would like to conclude by appealing to the people of my age group to stop and think about evaluating your dependence on mobiles. Thank you.

    Against

Respected Chairman, members of the Jury and my worthy fellow debaters, a hearty good morning to you all. I stand here today to express my views against today’s topic of debate. I strongly believe that mobile phones are nothing but advantageous.

Mobile phones have revolutionized our lives. They are more than facilitators of communication in today’s time. Mobiles are now virtual teachers too. The massive open online courses are accessible through mobiles and a huge number of students are benefitted through them. Internet has become our go-to platform for everything and without mobiles, perhaps we wouldn’t be able to utilize it much.

Apart from that we cannot underestimate the utility of mobiles in emergencies.

Friends, not only can we not dispense with mobiles in today’s time, but it would be foolish to do so. Thus, I would conclude by reinstating my point that they are one of the best inventions of mankind. Thank you.
